Adcote girls sing at ‘Bookfest Remembers’ Concert – recorded by the BBC

Around 20 girls from Year 7 to Year 13 at Adcote School took part in a large and unique concert on Saturday 21st November. Put on by the literary charity ‘Bookfest’, the concert aimed to commemorate the centenary of the First World War and its literary legacy through music and readings.

Along with other ensembles and choirs including the Shropshire Youth Wind Orchestra, the Shawbury Military Wives Choir and the Band and Bugles of the Armed Cadet Force, the Adcote girls sang in a combined choir of 120 to premiere some new WW1 songs. These included famous war poetry by Wilfred Owen and Siegfried Sassoon. The songs were commissioned specially for the occasion and were written by Adcote’s own Mrs Besterman who is a composer.

In front of a large audience, the concert was introduced by the High Sheriff of Shropshire. It was recorded by the BBC, filmed by the Arts Council, and compered by Vicki Archer. An abridged version of the concert will be broadcast on Christmas Day at 3 pm and on Monday 28th December at 6 pm on BBC Radio Shropshire. Very well done and thank you to all girls and parents involved!
