Malvern St James Receives Gold Award for Healthy Eating

16 February 2017

The school is now the very proud recipient of not only the Gold Healthier Choices Food Award but also the Level 5 Food Hygiene Rating. It is rare to achieve top ratings in these two areas and the school is delighted.

Mrs Anita Fisher, Head of Catering, and her dedicated team work hard to ensure that nutritionally balanced menus that cater for all preferences, nationalities and special dietary requirements are available to the girls and staff at MSJ. All of the food used at the school comes from a small family supplier in Gloucestershire, which sources a lot of its products from the local area. Mrs Fisher and MSJ’s Head Chef, Mrs Chris Doogan, have even been to visit the farm where MSJ’s pork comes from.

MSJ has a lot to be proud of – all meals are produced and cooked on site using fresh meat and vegetables; healthy drinks, fresh fruit and daily homemade vegetarian soup are always on the menu and breads and desserts are cooked on site. A more refined menu with smaller portions, smaller plates and less spice is available for younger girls in the Prep Department.

Examples of menu items include Caribbean chicken and pumpkin curry with jasmine rice, Normandy mushroom wellington with chunky fries and garden peas, sweet chilli beef stir fry with mixed leaves and vegetable Cumberland pie with farmhouse vegetables. A salad bar, usually themed on Mediterranean or Tapas dishes is also available each day.

“It’s a fantastic achievement and a wonderful accolade for Mrs Fisher and the Catering team, who do an exceptional job in providing us with delicious and healthy meals on a daily basis. The award is validation of what we have known for a long time about MSJ’s catering.” Mrs Olivera Raraty, Headmistress.
