A variety of professions were represented by the 22 parents who generously gave up their time to talk with the girls at the Business Breakfast about their fields of expertise, these included: Marketing, Medicine and Music, as well as Accountancy, Architecture and Law. School governor, Clodie Sutcliffe, also attended to discuss her role in the police force. First-hand knowledge and advice were offered, and ingested, alongside the croissants and coffee, and the students were very pleased to be given the opportunity to discuss various careers in an informal setting.
Mrs Holloway spoke during the Parents for Parity breakfast about how the school champions the opportunities available for the next generation of school–leavers and how breaking the glass ceiling in many professions is a priority for the staff and pupils, and one that is clearly supported by the parents also. The Head stressed the importance of International Women’s Day to celebrate the social, cultural and political achievements of women. She said, ‘The aim of the Be Bold For Change initiative is to accelerate the rate of progress towards gender parity which is due to occur in 170 years’ time at the current pace of change. I encourage all members of the school community to speak out against gender inequality whenever they encounter it and to champion inclusivity and equality in all the areas that they can influence.’ Thanks go to all of the parents who attended the breakfast.
Miss Jacinta Collins, Head of Careers at Talbot Heath, organised an excellent week of events for the students, beginning with a senior school assembly, where Year 6 were also invited, to hear Sean Noonan, a science and technology ambassador, offer advice about self-development and what employers look for in applications. Wednesday’s assembly was presented by the STEM teams from Lower 4 and Upper 4, explaining ‘What is STEM?’ and was followed by the Lower 6 Young Enterprise Competition heat later in the afternoon; company displays and pitches were presented in front of a panel of judges. On Thursday morning, former Talbot Heath pupil, Natalie Collins, who is currently working for Savills, talked to sixth formers about graduate and apprenticeship schemes.
It was a very informative and inspiring week for the girls, and particular thanks go to Miss Collins for organising and overseeing these events.
