The Science Department was delighted to find out over Easter that Mrs Jan McKernan’s 3D model display board of the Fluid Mosaic Model (the model of the cell membrane we teach the girls in the first year of Biology A Level) in the school’s Darwin lab had been awarded first prize in the 2017 National STEM Learning Classroom Display competition.
The competition aims to promote classroom creativity, giving teachers the chance to send in entries of their classroom displays. Teachers were tasked with sharing a photo of their boards, plus the resources used to create it. This will hopefully enable other teachers to be inspired and replicate similar ideas within their own classrooms.
STEM subjects are very popular at St Mary’s Calne, with many girls going on to top universities to study STEM subjects, such as Human Sciences and Political Science and Veterinary Medicine (at Cambridge), Biological Sciences and Biomedical Sciences (Edinburgh), Biochemistry and Biomedical Science (King’s College London), Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Civil Engineering, Mathematics and Statistics (Oxford), Chemical Engineering (Georgia Tech, USA), Biochemistry and Mathematics (St Andrews), Mechanical Engineering (Leeds), Chemical Engineering (Loughborough), Earth Science and Medicine (Newcastle) and Applied Medical Sciences (UCL).
