Second Year Running of 500 Words Success for Cranford House

Second Year Running of 500 Words Success for Cranford House

15 May 2017

The UK’s biggest creative story writing competition for children, 500 Words saw more than 132,000 entries this year from across the UK, making Year 6 pupil, Ellen’s achievement all the more remarkable. What’s more, six more Cranford House pupils from Years 6, 7 and 8 also progressed through the first round to the final 4,000 – no mean feat in itself. Ellen is now looking forward to a trip to this year’s Awards Ceremony at the Tower of London, where she will be rubbing shoulders with the likes of HRH The Duchess of Cornwall, DJ Chris Evans and Niall Horan of One Direction fame.

Assistant Head, Christine Ellis, is thrilled at Ellen’s 500 Words success, particularly as this is the second year running that a Cranford pupil has got through to the competition final. “I am delighted that, yet again, our girls are demonstrating their strength, creativity and skill in their writing, building on our strong tradition of achievement and success at both local and national level. We wish Ellen the very best of luck. As an English teacher, my advice to young writers is always to listen to yourself, to your thoughts, feelings and ideas. If you are interested and excited by what you are writing, you have a much better chance of communicating that excitement to your readers.”

The 500 Words final takes place on Friday 16 June 2017 and will be broadcast on the BBC Radio 2 Chris Evans Breakfast Show. We wish Ellen the very best of luck!
