Withington Girls’ School is celebrating yet another set of superb A Level results, with 74% of subjects passed at A* and A grades and 91% of all subjects passed at grades A*, A or B. From this year’s A Level cohort of 69 girls, an impressive 29% of all grades achieved were passed with the top A* grade with eight students achieving a clean sweep of A*s in all subjects taken and more than half of students achieved at least 3 A*- A grades.
Withington is proud of its girls’ consistently high levels of achievement across a wide range of subjects, which, on the basis of the elite A* grade achieved, is four times higher than the national average of around 7% and, once again, has enabled the vast majority of students to gain admission to their first-choice university and degree course. Popular university destinations for 2017 include Birmingham, Bristol, Durham, Edinburgh, London (LSE, UCL, KCL and Imperial), Leeds and Manchester. The girls’ chosen degree courses include art, dentistry, economics, engineering, English, geography, history, mathematics, medicine, modern foreign languages, philosophy, physiotherapy, politics, psychology and veterinary science – Withington girls have once again excelled across the board, including in the core STEM subjects (Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and Physics).
This year, eight girls – which represents 12 % of the cohort – will take up their places at Oxford or Cambridge to read for degrees in a variety of subjects including Classics, Fine Art, History, Medicine, Philosophy, Politics and Economics.
Withington’s Headmistress, Mrs Sarah Haslam, said of the A-Level results:

In this year’s context of A Level reform in particular, it is satisfying to see the girls’ and their teachers’ outstanding dedication rewarded in results that enable our girls to move on to the university courses of their choice, many the most competitive in the land, and to see them leave with the skills, values, personal and social qualities needed to embrace the opportunities and challenges ahead and to go where their ambitions and dreams take them.
We are delighted for the girls, their parents, teachers and all members of the school community who have played their part in this success.’
