In another tremendously successful year at Portsmouth High School GDST Sixth Formers excitedly received their A Level results marking yet another year of excellent academic and personal achievements for students at the school.
Girls achieved over 20% of A* grades and an impressive half of all grades at A Level were A*/A and 80% were A*- B. There was an excellent spread of top grades over all subjects. All the girls who sat further mathematics gained an A*, all the girls who sat classics gained an A* or A, 79% of girls who sat biology received A*-B and 100% of girls who sat a modern language gained an A*-B.
Twins, Hannah and Eleanor Burford, 18, having received 16 A*s, 3 As and a B two years ago at GCSEs, have received 6A*/As between them. Hannah is going to the University of Lancaster to read Mechanical Engineering and Eleanor to the University of York to read Chemistry.
‘The friends I’ve made at Portsmouth High School will last a lifetime,’ said Eleanor. ‘I’m very excited about university but I will miss Hannah.’
Hannah added: ‘The teachers have been amazing and yes, Eleanor will miss me when something technical goes wrong!’
Their father, Mr Burford, added: ‘We will miss them both. The house will be very quiet without them.’
Maleha Khan, 18, received an A and 2 Bs and has been offered a place at the University of Southampton to read Aeronautical Engineering with a possibility of joining the RAF in the future.
‘I am so excited,’ she said. ‘I’ve been with the RAF cadets for the past three years and am now a Sergeant. My Squadron is in Hedge End so I can combine staying on with the cadets and my degree. I’ve always wanted to broaden my horizons and I hope that this degree will do just that.’
Oxbridge successes included Tegan Hull, 18, who gained 3 A*s and an A to ensure her place at Cambridge to read Natural Sciences. ‘I am absolutely delighted and so excited about going to Cambridge,’ she said. Abi Harindra, 17, who gained her place at Oxford to read Law was equally thrilled.
‘I am delighted for the girls with this wonderful set of results,’ said Headmistress, Mrs Jane Prescott. ‘Today is such a pivotal moment in their education and comes after years of hard work and determination. The girls are supported by a tremendous team of teachers and tutors and I believe that these results demonstrate that Portsmouth High School is continuously providing high quality education to girls in Portsmouth and the wider area. We also understand that the school isn’t just about results but about preparing the girls for the next stages of their adult lives.’
Mr John Paget-Tomlinson, Deputy Headmaster (Academic) at Portsmouth High School added:
‘It is a joy to see how delighted the girls are with their amazing results. There is a tremendous atmosphere within the Portsmouth High Sixth Form. The girls have a real determination to succeed and excellent working relationships with their teachers; it’s a winning combination.’
Throughout the university application process sixth form tutors are on hand to give students one to one advice and support. A focus on monitoring and target setting, as well as specialist careers guidance, ensures every girl is on course to achieve her goals.
