Record-breaking GCSE Results for St Mary’s Calne Girls

24 August 2017

Girls and staff at St Mary’s Calne are celebrating following the girls’ record-breaking GCSE results, with an outstanding 60% of all entries grade A*, the best results achieved by girls at the school to date. The girls also achieved a superb 84% A*-A and 98% A*-B grades.

24 of the 54 girls achieved A*-A grades across all their subjects, including eight girls with a clean sweep of A*s. Special congratulations to our top three performers: Frances Arnold, Hannah Barber and Sophie Mallinson (all with an exceptional 11 A*s) and to Zara Collier Baggs, Lily Douglas-Pennant, Sylvia Rutherford, Ila Shetty and Charka Stout who all gained 10 A*s. In addition, Zara (who joined St Mary’s on a Foundation Scholarship, offered to gifted and talented girls from the state sector*) and Ila also achieved the highest possible grade (9) in the newly reformed English Language examination.

There were some excellent results in many of the subjects, including: 100% A*-A in Music and Greek, 96% A*-A in Spanish, 94% A*-A in both Biology and Latin, 92% A*-A in History and Religious Studies, 91% A*-A in Geography, 89% A*-A in German, 83% A*-A in English Literature and 80% A*-A in French, Maths, Chemistry and Physics. This year also saw the first year of the reformed English Language paper, graded 9 to ,1 and we are delighted that our girls achieved the equivalent to 72% at A*-A.

Headmistress, Dr Felicia Kirk, commented: “The girls richly deserve these outstanding results and I would like to congratulate each and every one of them. There is a culture of achievement and academic rigour at St Mary’s and the girls have really risen to these academic challenges, while also enjoying the huge breadth and quality of extra-curricular opportunities open to them. My thanks to all the teaching and non-teaching staff who are so dedicated in supporting the girls to enable them to achieve their goals. In our recent ISI inspection, the inspectors commented that the ‘relationships between pupils and their teaching staff are excellent’ and highlighted the importance that the girls’ tutors play. All the girls are exceptionally well supported in both their academic and extra-curricular pursuits at St Mary’s Calne and this is, I believe, one of the factors that make the school so special. The girls are certainly well poised to make the most of all the opportunities awaiting them in the Sixth Form and I am sure they will continue to flourish in all areas of school life.”
