STEM in Song Success for Talbot Heath girls

14 September 2017

The two 13-year-old pupils from Talbot Heath school, in Bournemouth have been invited to an evening event at St Catharine’s at the end of September, where they will be given the opportunity to read their poem, entitled ‘Chemical Love Song’, a witty poem which cleverly celebrates the periodic table and chemical characteristics. The winning poem will be announced by the judges at the end of the evening then set to music by the College composer, Gwyneth Herbert, and ultimately recorded by the Girls’ Choir.

Also at the event will be performances from the St. Catharine’s Girls’ Choir and short presentations from scientists. We wish them every success for the final.

Chemical Love Song

I’ll be the potassium if you’ll be the oxygen, we will be something that can’t be contained.
Balance your intake and I’ll be your star if you’ll be my moon cause I would travel anywhere with you.

If I am the lithium will you be my hydrogen?
Would you be my silicon if I was the oxygen, then we could make a chemical bond?
Because this is a chemical song.

Like an equation it works itself out, you have to be patient and balance the sides.
If you don’t then we won’t be an equation and we would be done.
Which would mean than you are gone.

This is your chemical love song. A place to start a chemical bond like Na Cl.
I like Ag and Bi but none of those sparkle like your eyes tonight.

I’ll be the copper and you will be the oxygen, joining together to make copper oxide.
You’ll be the magnesium and I’ll be the oxygen, making magnesium oxide.

You’re like gold you’re beautiful and shiny and I would go with you wherever you are.

Just like an atom you can’t rip us apart. If we broke up I’d give up H2O for H2 SO4.
But I’d still fall for you cause you matter so much to me.

Like an equation it works itself out, you have to be patient and balance the sides. To make equations work because this is your chemical love song. A place to start a chemical bond.

This is the end of our chemical love song and we will sing it together, forever this is a place to start our chemical journey together for ever until we fade away.

Until we fade away…
