Victory for Cobham Hall Girls at the British Schools’ Biathlon

16 October 2017

Cobham Hall is celebrating success at the Regional British Schools’ Biathlon Championships after finding out that Lilly Gibbs, Year 11, followed a good swim by winning her run, resulting in her going on to win the Under 17 age category.

In addition to Lilly’s fantastic win, our Under 15 team, comprising of Year 10 students Maisy Rose and Holly Chandler-Smith, and Year 9’s Alice Fry, achieved a second place finish.  When cross-country runner Maisy joined Cobham Hall in Year 7, she was not a very strong swimmer, yet she managed to knock an astonishing 20 seconds off her 200m swim time, and went on to achieve an outstanding time of 5 minutes 21 seconds in the 1600 meters race.  Meanwhile, Natasha, Year 7, achieved a 6th place finish in the Under 13 category, in her first Biathlon representing Cobham Hall.

The Biathlon event comprises of a swim and a run, and students have the chance to qualify for the British Schools’ Modern Biathlon Championships, which take place in March.  Lilly’s win means automatic qualification.

Head of PE Mrs Hooper said afterwards, “All of the girls performed with confidence and determination.  They truly were a credit to the School and themselves.  As well as a win and a second place, many of the girls managed to achieve personal best times, and I’m so proud of all of them.”

To top the day off, the girls were presented with their medals by Cobham Hall Elder and Modern Pentathlete Kate French.
