Billie Jean King salutes Queenswood’s National Tennis Champions

7 December 2017

Queenswood‘s tennis aces are celebrating their historic victory at the National Team Tennis Championships in Bolton on 1 December.

The competition started back in April with 2,500 schools across the country entering. Queenswood battled through the County round, Regional knock-out and Regional finals to reach the Nationals, where they faced the Regional winners from the South East, South West, North and Midlands.

The girls played both singles and doubles rounds, culminating in a closely-contested match against arch rivals Talbot Heath, which Queenswood won 4-2.

The legendary Billie Jean King was quick to tweet a message of support following the victory (see attached).

The team comprised Maia Mountain (age 14), Issey Purser (age 13), Imogen Haddad (age 12), Jess Mathews (age 13) and Given Roach (age 12).

Director of Tennis Catherine Sluter said, ‘I am so proud of the team spirit we showed today on the court. Beating such fierce opposition is no mean feat!’

It has been an incredible year for Queenswood tennis, with our girls reaching the final of the Aberdare Cup in July and picking up the bronze medal at the World Schools Tennis Championships in Brazil. In September, Tennis Scholar Given Roach won Gold at the Four Nations Championships.
