Bromley High Chess Team Reach National Chess Final

25 January 2018

On Sunday, a very young team from Bromley High School took part in the Southern Section of the National Schools Under 19 Chess Championships. The tournament was held at St Catherine’s School in Bramley and Bromley were competing against some of the most prestigious schools in the South of England. The team was captained by Charlotte Bruce from Year 8. Charlotte played on the top board and played some of the best female chess players, in the country most of whom were much older than her. Her score of one win and a draw was therefore a very creditable performance. Our second player was Roxolana Chaban from Year 4 who was representing the Senior School for the second time. Roxolana won all her five games in a very convincing manner, again against opponents much older than her. Roxolana’s performance was truly excellent. Our third player was Isabelle Wistow from Year 9. Isabelle played some very exciting chess and her games were the most difficult to predict. Isabelle’ final scores was two wins out of her five games but it could easily have been more.

Twenty five teams took part in the competition with the top teams qualifying for the National Final. After missing out by one place in 2017, the team were keen to qualify this year and were in a qualifying position for the first four rounds. However in the final round Bromley were overtaken by two other teams and, although being in a medal-winning position, again failed to qualify by half a point.  One of the schools however has been unable to take their place in the final and however and Bromley as the next best team has been now awarded a place in the National Final with just seven other schools from England and Wales.
