Abbot’s Hill School take on Arthur Miller’s ‘The Crucible’

14 February 2018

Well done to all of the cast and crew at Abbot’s Hill School for another amazing Senior School Production which took place from 2-3 February in the Judi Dench Theatre.

Inspired by true events, Arthur Miller’s ‘The Crucible’ focuses on the inconsistencies of the Salem witch trials and the extreme behaviour that can result from dark and hidden agendas. The play is based on the historical accounts of the witch trials.

In the town of Salem, a group of teenage girls, led by Abigail Williams, accuse men and women of witchcraft. The efforts of the court to find out the truth are swayed by the hysteria that the girls create in the court room. The judge chooses to believe the girls’ stories, to save the reputation of the court, and this leads to tragic consequences for many innocent townspeople.

Mrs Sparrow, Head of Drama at Abbot’s Hill, said “This play tells a harrowing story in which the small town of Salem is slowly taken over by mass hysteria. In the rehearsal process, the actors and I became part of the Crucible ourselves, and discovered something much richer and more complex than melodrama.

I can say with every ounce of sincerity that directing this play has been one of the most enjoyable experiences of my time at Abbot’s Hill. I owe this to the wonderful cast that I have been blessed with, the fabulous Performing Arts team that I have been lucky enough to work with, and, of course, Arthur Millar and his awe-inspiring way with pen and paper.”

Congratulations to the fantastic cast, backstage team and staff production team who worked tirelessly to bring the Crucible to life.

The play has received fantastic feedback:

“The production was excellent, and for such a complex play, the girls put in an excellent performance, of a standard and maturity, well beyond their years.  I am so proud of her and the performance she put in. The experience has shown her how hard work and dedication can pay off, and has lifted her inner confidence in a way we could never have achieved as parents.” – Cast parent

“We have been talking about The Crucible ever since.  Well done, everything about it was brilliant.
The acting was exceptional, and all the effects were so brilliant. The music was so beautiful and very atmospheric.  We loved the way Elizabeth’s character/personality evolved.” – Senior School parent

“What a splendid achievement to achieve such a gripping production from such a young cast. There were such splendid performances from so many girls and they held the attention of the audience throughout. They were as usual well supported by the set, the music and the lighting.” – Mrs J Mark, Chairman of the Governors
