On Tuesday 20 February Prior’s Field welcomed the BBC’s ‘face of space’ scientist Dr. Maggie Aderin-Pocock, MBE, as guest speaker at the annual Julia Huxley Lecture. The lecture is a highlight of the school calendar which every year provides an opportunity for the school and local community alike, to hear an insightful talk from a notable personality and this year was no exception as the school hall was crammed with over 300 eager audience members, many of whom queued for over an hour to gain the opportunity for a signed book and photo with Dr. Aderin-Pocock.
Dr. Aderin-Pocock’s impassioned and humorous speech (entitled Reach for the Stars) focussed on her fascinating journey to both science and screen success through the challenge of 13 school changes, dyslexia and the common misconception that science is a male domain. Her call for everyone to “desire to aspire and reach for the stars, whatever your stars might be” clearly echoes Prior’s Field’s own mantra of aim high and have a go.
