St Mary’s School in Calne is delighted that the building work which started in July on its new £2.55 million Sports Complex is nearing completion, with the new facility set to open on 16th April, 2018.
The new Sports Complex will provide additional facilities to the school’s existing community-shared indoor swimming pool and fitness gym and includes:
• A sports hall (34m x 20m) with provision for 4 badminton courts; netball; tennis; hockey; volleyball; basketball; football; gymnastics and cricket nets.
• A large dance studio.
• A multi-purpose room
• New changing facilities
• A viewing gallery.
As well as benefiting the pupils at St Mary’s Calne and St Margaret’s Preparatory Schools, the new indoor facilities will broaden the schools’ community support by offering access to sports and leisure activities that are not otherwise available locally. The school has, with the support and guidance of Wiltshire and Swindon Sport (WASP), identified a number of local youth groups, charities and sports clubs who will greatly benefit from access to the new facilities. Steve Neale, Operations Director at WASP commented: “The school has a successful track record of delivery in the sector and in enhancing accessibility to quality facilities and increasing participation, particularly in the youth sector.”
The school currently has partnerships with a number of community groups, schools, colleges and individuals including local swimming and running clubs, members of the Paralympic GB Team , children and young people with specific learning and social difficulties. With the support of the existing Sports Centre staff, these community groups will be able to enjoy top-level facilities, coaching and activities that they would not otherwise be able to easily access.
Headmistress of St Mary’s Calne, Dr Felicia Kirk, stressed the importance of sport within the school offering:
“I truly believe that sport is a key component of an all-round education; learning to own your victories and cope with your defeats gives young people grit, determination and ultimately a sense of belief and self-confidence.”
The Grand Opening of the new Sports Complex will take place on Saturday, 12th May 2018, when pupils and parents from both schools, along with staff, governors, donors, supporters and visiting Heads from other schools, will be able to enjoy family tennis competitions, Kwik Cricket, Archery and taster sessions of judo, cricket and badminton in the new Sports Complex.
In 2014, The Calne Foundation Trust* developed a 10-year plan ‘Shaping the Future’ for
St Mary’s and St Margaret’s Schools and the local community. One of its key features was the schools’ Vision for Sport, which highlighted the need for a multi-purpose Sports Complex.
The purpose is simple: to foster a healthy, aspirational attitude to physical education, whether participants are a member of our wider community, as pupils of the schools or part of a sports team.
*The Calne Foundation Trust is a charitable trust established in 2012. It aims to ensure continuing investment in the facilities at St Mary’s Calne and St Margaret’s Preparatory School as well as investment in educational programmes benefiting both the pupils of the schools and more widely the local community, in particular youth groups.
