St Helen and St Katharine mount stellar stage adaptation of film, Before Sunrise

In the summer of last year, St Helen’s Performing Arts Facilities Manager contacted Richard Linklater (Slacker, Dazed And Confused, Boyhood) to investigate the possibility of mounting a production of the first part of his Before… trilogy as a Sixth Form production. With kind permission granted and a great cast assembled – including Bede, a student from Abingdon School and Alek, a St Helen’s Drama Scholar – rehearsals began in September.

The piece was performed in January. A profound meditation on friendship, love, and intimacy, Before Sunrise follows Jesse and Celine as they meet, initially as strangers on a train, and decide to spend one night together walking around Vienna, gradually growing closer and opening themselves up to the other. Heartfelt congratulations to Alek and Bede (in his theatre debut) who turned in thoroughly engaging and intelligent performances as the star-crossed travellers.
