Clare Balding opens St Mary’s Calne’s new Sports Complex

21 May 2018

On Saturday 12th May St Mary’s Calne marked the opening of their new Sports Complex with a ‘Celebration of Sport’. Families, Governors, staff and friends of both St Mary’s and St Margaret’s schools were invited to an afternoon of family fun. Activities included tennis, cricket, swimming, basketball, mini-activities, badminton as well as fun on the bouncy castle and ice creams for everyone! Music filled the air too, as St Mary’s Big Band entertained the crowds as they gathered for the official opening ceremony.

St Mary’s were pleased to welcome representatives from Badminton England, Wiltshire Cricket, Wiltshire and Swindon Sport and Community First. As community partners, the school is delighted to be sharing its new facilities with community groups, outside of normal school hours. This includes winter training for Wiltshire Cricket County Girls teams, primary and secondary school initiatives with Badminton England, young player sessions for Calne Badminton and holiday activities for members of Youth Action Wiltshire, Wiltshire Young Carers and Community First.

The guest of honour, Clare Balding, gave an entertaining speech encouraging the younger members of the audience to say how sport made them feel before cutting the ribbons to open formally the new St Mary’s Sports Centre. Headmistress, Dr Felicia Kirk, spoke enthusiastically about the opportunities in sport at all levels which the new Sports Complex will provide for pupils at St Mary’s and St Margaret’s. She warmly thanked all those who have supported the fundraising for the new building. Announcing that the new Sports Hall will be named after retiring Chairman of Governors, Simon Knight, she paid tribute for his passion for the project and thanked him for his support. Pupils from St Mary’s and St Margaret’s also gave short speeches covering what the new facilities will mean to them and how the exciting new sports and leisure activities will be enjoyed by all. Mrs Karen Cordon, Headmistress of St Margaret’s Preparatory School, closed proceedings with a formal thank you to Clare Balding for her inspiring and enjoyable speech and invited all the guests to enjoy afternoon tea.

Following the opening ceremony, St Mary’s 1st XI Lacrosse Team challenged the Alumnae to a nail-biting game, that was competitive and exhilarating to the final whistle – with the ‘Old Girls’ winning by 1 goal! The finals of the Family Tennis Competition were also played; the winners of the Sixth Form Tournament were Celia and her father; Selena and her father won the Fifth Form competition and the Fourth Form was won by Octavia and her mother.

The whole afternoon marked a truly remarkable achievement – the completion of our Vision for Sport. The new facilities put St Mary’s and St Margaret’s at the forefront of sport and leisure for all our pupils.
