Bolton Girls Discover Practical Maths and Physics

Bolton Girls Discover Practical Maths and Physics

18 October 2018

Pupils in Year 8 enjoyed a fascinating interactive presentation about maths and physics from BAE Systems, the RAF and the Navy. They learned how maths is used every day, often without anyone realising it. The talk also revealed the many different kinds of engineering jobs available today.

One of the highlights of the presentation was MIA the miniature interactive automaton, who is able to dance, talk, get up when she falls over and complete difficult mathematical problems in moments, all thanks to her programming. Girls were able to see some of the complex code used to program MIA and find out how she works.

There were several demonstrations throughout the talk, often involving audience participation, and pupils had lots of fun discovering the maths and physics behind each one.
