Five inspiring Sixth Form students have been appointed as senior prefects for the new academic year at Monmouth School for Girls.

The new Head Girl, Faisa Yusuf, is studying Biology, Chemistry and Maths at A level and hopes to read Medicine at Cambridge.

A keen basketball player, Faisa volunteers with Arthritis Research to help young children who suffer with the condition.

She also volunteers to help a woman with Alzheimer’s disease and teaches Maths and English to primary school children.

“Being crowned the bard at our 2017 Eisteddfod was a proud moment,” recalled Faisa, who achieved nine A*s and an A at GCSE.

“The poem I wrote meant a lot to me and helped to convey my thoughts on the importance of memories and the how dementia and old age can affect memories and make a person lose so much of themselves.”

Faisa is also part of the school’s debating society and the women’s forum and organises Sixth Form events.

“I am looking forward to speaking to girls across the school and listening to their concerns as well as seeing what legacy this generation of school students can leave on the school community,” said Faisa.

She added: “I just want to become a better person and see where the future takes me. I want to study Medicine at university and make a difference to at least one person’s life.”

Lisa Davies, Deputy Head Girl, hopes to study Mechanical Engineering at Oxford University.

Lisa runs her own business, Xorbit, a car dehumidifier and air freshener in a cup, and was named UK Junior Engineer of the Year at the Big Bang Fair in 2016.

She has been awarded a prestigious Arkwright Engineering Scholarship and is a keen musician, playing the harp and flute.

“I want to be a role model to younger girls and encourage them to make the most of every opportunity that comes their way,” said Lisa, who achieved 10 A*s at GCSE.

Lisa, who is studying Maths, Further Maths, Economics and Physics at A level, added: “Not only do I hope to be a successful engineer in the future, but I hope to inspire the next generation of young girls to enter into STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics).”

Deputy Head Girl, Katie Cameron, plays netball and is a competitive swimmer, who also enjoys playing the flute and girlguiding.

She is hoping to read French and German at Edinburgh University and continue her interest in global issues.

Katie achieved 6A*s and 4 As at GCSE and is studying French, German and Geography at A level.

“I want to reach out to all members of the school community – whether it be the younger members, members of staff or visitors to the school.”

She added: “In the future, I would love to work abroad and have a role in international relations.  I would enjoy having the opportunity to see the world and meet new people.”

Deputy Head Girl, Caitlin Clarke, joined the school last September and is captain of hockey and runs the Monmouth Schools Medical Society.

Caitlin is taking Biology, Psychology and Chemistry at A level and is hoping to read Medicine.

She achieved three A*s and seven As at GCSE and was the runner-up last year in Wales’ Schools Essay competition organised by the Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh.

Deputy Head Girl (Boarding), Mererid Jones, is studying A levels in English, German, Latin and Music.

A talented musician, Mererid is a member of the National Youth Orchestra of Wales, Haberdashers’ Monmouth Schools Symphony Orchestra (HMSSO) and Senior strings.

Mererid gained her Level 4 ATCL (Associateship diploma from Trinity College London) Violin Diploma while in Year 11 and is hoping to read Music at university.

“I am looking forward to working with and listening to boarders of all ages,” said Mererid, who achieved 12 A*s and an A at GCSE.

“I intend to listen to and appreciate others’ views so that improvements can be made to their school and boarding experience. I want to act as a role model and support all the other prefects, especially in boarding.”
