Continuous Innovation at Bedford Girls’ School

9 November 2018

Bedford Girls’ School (BGS) has been recognised for a second time as an Apple Distinguished School (ADS) for its innovative use of Apple technology in the curriculum.

The Apple Distinguished School award is achieved by only a handful of schools in the country who show exceptional innovation, leadership and educational excellence, and demonstrate a clear vision of exemplary learning environments.

BGS has had a one-to-one iPad programme in place since 2012 and was one of the first schools in the country to recognise the crucial role that mobile technology can play in forward-thinking teaching and learning.

Mr James Potter, Director of Digital Strategy, said: “The latest ADS award shows we are continuing to be at the forefront of the integration of technology into education and building the skills and understanding within our girls to ensure that they are prepared for a rapidly changing technological landscape.”

Miss Jo MacKenzie, Headmistress of BGS, adds: “We are delighted to be recognised once again as Apple Distinguished School leaders. Enhancing traditional teaching and learning methods with iPads offers the girls and teachers the flexibility they need in a fast-paced learning environment.

“Our status as an Apple Distinguished School also allows us to have opportunities to meet and share best practice with educators in other countries and to create global links, which will be beneficial going forward.

“With the digital revolution gaining momentum, our staff understand the importance of bridging the ‘digital skills gap’ and preparing our students to be the next generation of leaders, problem-solvers and critical thinkers.”

Another key factor in BGS being awarded ADS status for the second time is its production of multi-touch books. The School now creates multi-touch books to support the curriculum and since April 2016 has created over 60 books to support teaching and learning with many more on the way.
