Students aim high at Bruton School for Girls Careers Day

12 December 2018

Students in Years 11 and 12 from local schools, Sexey’s and Ansford Academy, joined those from Bruton School for Girls at the recent BSG annual Careers Day to gain an insight into what lies beyond A Levels and Higher Education.

Twenty-five career areas were represented from sectors as diverse as law, radiography, surveying and engineering. We also welcomed back some BSG ‘old girls’ who had travelled from various parts of the UK to enthuse the audience about their exciting careers.

Assistant Head of Sixth Form and Head of Careers at Bruton School for Girls, Harriet Derioz, explained: “We know that to equip students for a life beyond the classroom is an inherent and vital aspect of a broad all-round education; hearing from experts with such a huge diversity of professional experience is a crucial element of planning for future careers and decision making. We were delighted to welcome so many young students from local schools, along with our own girls, and offer them different insights into future career paths. We very much hope the Bruton School for Girls Careers Event 2018 has inspired everyone with the determination to follow their goals and dreams, but to do so with some practical expert advice.”

The day started and ended with two fascinating key note speeches. Captain Suzanne Finch, a qualified Army Pilot based at Yeovilton, opened the event. She is currently responsible for one half of the Army Air Corps output on operations around the globe. Molly Gunn of Selfish Mother fame inspired the students at the close of the day when she gave her 10 top tips for success, she spoke about always aiming high and not taking no for an answer.

The Careers Day is an annual event which forms part of the structured careers advice and support that is offered throughout the school and is recognised as contributing to the outstanding outcomes and successes for the girls who choose to study at Bruton School for Girls.
