Equestrians were out in force at the NSEA County Show Jumping Qualifiers which saw riders from schools across Berkshire, Hampshire and Oxfordshire vying to qualify for both the NSEA National County Championships and the Hickstead Elite Championship later this year. 12 St Helen’s students competed, both as teams and individually, in all five classes.
Sophie (Year 9) set the bar high in the first event of the day, the 70cm, riding a brilliantly fast, accurate round. Her time was three seconds faster than her nearest rival, and earned her first prize and a qualification for the National County Championships as the highest placed Oxfordshire rider.
In the 80cm class Scarlett (Year 9) bagged fifth place against stiff competition, qualifying for the County Championships as the highest placed Oxfordshire individual rider. Then in the team section the Blue team – Sophie, Scarlett, Maisie (Year 7) and Leni (Year 9) – all jumped clear and their combined time gave them second place and team qualification for Oxfordshire in the County Championships.
Later in the day, Estelle (Upper Sixth) managed to achieve both a win in the 1 metre class and second place in the 1.10 metre, qualifying for the County Championships in the first class and for Hickstead in the second. And brave riding from all four members of the Green team – Lucy (Upper Sixth), Estelle, Zoe (Year 10) and Scarlett – gave them a very convincing team win and a ticket to both the National County Championships and Hickstead to represent Oxfordshire.
All in all a fantastic performance from the entire team with a remarkable set of results across the board.
