Two sisters from Roedean have qualified to represent England in the World Street Dancing Championships this summer.
Dance scholars Amelie Hurley, 14, and her sister India, 11, will compete against youngsters from across the globe at the Blackpool championships this August in a bid to bring back much coveted trophies to their Brighton Dance School, Streetfunk, which trains at the Marina Studios.
They will compete in the advanced categories for solos, duos, quads and crews.
Neither are strangers to competing at this level and are already very successful on the dance floor. India, along with her junior crew Killabeez, is an U10 world champion while Amelie won the 2018 U16 street dance house battle European title even though she is two years young for the category.
They are also UK street dancing champions after winning the title along with their crews Origen and Defiance in Harrow last November, with Amelie also taking silver medals in solos and duos.
Amelie, who is also a model and actress who has appeared in many adverts dancing including the M&S Christmas advert and JC Penny in the US, said: “We have both been dancing since we were three and have always been inspired by the amazing dancing you see on TV. I also do Grade 8 ballet at my school – I just love dance generally!”
Roedean teacher Dr Ross Barrand said: “It’s wonderful to see the girls at school doing every type of dance you can think of. When we stage the Dance showcase every year, the audience get a real treat watching our amazing street dancers.”
Mum Jean Hurley explained how hard-working and passionate the sisters are: “They both take their dance to the highest level. Last year they spent every Saturday going up to London to dance with Kate Prince’s ZooNation Youth Company which culminated in a performance at the Royal Festival Hall. It was a very proud moment.”
