On Tuesday 29th of January, six talented members of the Talbot Heath STEM team – known as Scientia – were lucky enough to travel to Harlow College, in Essex, for a Land Rover 4×4 In Schools Regional Final. The competitors had to design and manufacture a remote-controlled car, followed by a presentation about the design, and finally, to complete a testing track for it as if it were a real Land Rover. Designed to inspire young minds to take an engineering route in their careers and to encourage more people to take these jobs, the competition was highly challenging. The TH team designed a people carrier to transport citizens in high danger war-zones, such as North and South Sudan. The vehicle was designed for safety and functionality and so it would be robust enough to fit its purpose.
Although the girls narrowly missed a place in the competition, they gave a very good account of themselves in their design ideas and collaboration. Well done to Scientia, which was made up of Amy Bowen, Laura Driver, Hannah Elms, Evie Holloway, Izzy O’Rourke and Francesca Rowley. Science staff member, Hayley Luke, led the team and said how proud she was of them: ‘The team were up against technology colleges and schools with dedicated workshops, so to do as well as they did is a great achievement.’
