Celebrating International Women’s Day in Monmouth

11 March 2019

Students, staff and former pupils marked International Women’s Day at Monmouth School for Girls.

Led by Monmouth School for Girls Women’s Forum, former pupils Flora Coutts and Hannah Trefgarne returned to give a presentation at a networking event in the Performing Arts Centre.

Current pupils Caitlin Clarke, who was the host, Sophie Cooper and Charlie Buchanan also spoke at the event which called for a more gender-balanced world.

The theme for 2019 was Balance for Better and highlighted the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women.

Flora, who co-founded Coutts Hall Consulting, a specialist search firm to recruit senior lawyers, and Hannah, who works for Haygrove Ltd, a business which grows berries for supermarkets in the UK and Europe, were well-placed to discuss gender inequality.

Purple ribbons were also seen across the school on Friday 8th March, as pupils showed their support for International Women’s Day.

Head of Drama, Mrs Jodie Knight added: “The colour purple was used to signify the progress made by the suffragettes and the suffragists and the hope for a future of gender equality.”

All proceeds raised during the event will be donated to Plan International, to support the education of Selina, a Year 10 student in Kenya.
