Congratulations to LEH Team Brainy Baby Belt

Congratulations to LEH Team Brainy Baby Belt

7 May 2019

On 30th April, 4 members of LEH Pi Club travelled to CodeNode in London as one of 12 teams in the final of PA Consulting’s annual Raspberry Pi programming competition. This year’s competition challenged schools and clubs to think innovatively and creatively to transform experiences of travel and transport using a Raspberry Pi microcomputer.

Erin, Laura, Tabatha and Talia, all UIV, enjoyed a morning of robot building and codebreaking activities followed by speed networking sessions with industry experts and business leaders. They then exhibited their solution, the “Brainy Baby Belt”, a child’s car seat buckle plus control box, designed to make travel safer by issuing a warning alert when it becomes unfastened, and provide musical entertainment on the journey.

They were delighted to be awarded first place in their year 7-9 age group. The judges commented: “The team used a nice blend of hardware and software to create their product. The group worked fantastically together and delivered a great presentation. There is a clear benefit to this product and it could make a difference in the real world. The team had also thought about next steps to take the product forward and presented their ideas in a compelling way.”

They have now been invited to participate in a special engineering experience day with TFL, and have won various pieces of Pi-related kit plus ÂŁ1000 club/school funding. Many congratulations to the team, not just for winning, but for being such fantastic ambassadors for LEH, and for girls in technology.
