Two pupils at Monmouth School for Girls won the top prizes in an annual competition to celebrate the life of a gifted music scholar.
Ffion Sheppard won the vocal laurel with Hamlisch’s What We Did for Love and flautist Hazel Lau, with Passacaille (Rhené-Baton), took the instrumental prize in the Blacklock Music Competition for pupils in Years 7 to 10.
It was the fifth year of the renamed competition in honour of Dr Celia Blacklock, a former Monmouth School for Girls’ Music scholar, who died from cancer, aged just 33, in August 2014.
One of the highlights of the school’s musical calendar, 31 pupils had been whittled down, in an audition, to 12 finalists, all adjudicated by Stephen McDade, Assistant Director of Music at Malvern College.
Dr Blacklock’s parents, Charles and Lyn Blacklock presented the prizes which had been kindly donated by the Friends of Monmouth School for Girls.
