Malvern St James Girls’ School is delighted to announce excellent GCSE results across a diverse range of subjects for the 2019 cohort. 38% of entries scored a 9-8 or A* grades; and 55% of entries scored 9-7/A*-A grades.
Almost one-fifth of girls in the year group scored four or more grade 9s; almost 40% of girls scored four or more grades 9-8/A*; and 56% scored four or more grades 9-7/A*-A. Several girls gained a clean sweep of grades 9-8/A*.
These include day girls Georgia Hughes, from Colwall, who achieved nine grade 9s, one grade 8 and an A* in Further Mathematics; twins Faye and Madeleine Lynch Williams, from Upton on Severn, who between them achieved 18 grade 9s, 2 grade 8s, and an A* with Distinction. Rose Forester-Smith from Castlemorton has achieved nine grade 9s, one grade 8 and an A in Further Mathematics.
Ruby Davies, from Malvern, scored six grade 9s, two grade 8s, one grade 7, and an A* in Further Mathematics. Ruby will take up the prestigious Founders’ Award bursary scholarship for Sixth Form, which recognises academic, leadership and extra-curricular excellence.
Core subjects of Maths, English and Science showed strong results. In Maths, 52% of the year achieved grades 9-7; in English Literature 57% achieved 9-7; and an average of 70% achieved 9-7 in separate Sciences. Almost one-third of the year took Further Mathematics, with three-quarters of these achieving an A, A* or A* Distinction. The latter is particularly exceptional, and Faye Lynch Williams was one of the girls receiving an A* Distinction.
Modern Foreign Languages have also returned exceptional results, with French entries achieving 73% grades 9-7, German 80% grades 9-7 and Spanish 40% grades 9-7. In classical languages, Latin achieved 63% grades 9-7, and in Greek 100% of entries attained grades 9-8
In Humanities, Geography and History achieved 72% and 65% grades 9-7 respectively; whilst in the creative subjects, Music scored well, with over half (57%) of girls achieving grades 9-8; in Product Design, 67% achieving grades 9-8 and in Art, 72% achieving grades 9-8.
Headmistress, Mrs Olivera Raraty, commented, “I’m tremendously pleased with our girls’ achievements, which recognise their commendable effort and talent. I am especially proud of those girls who have worked hard to raise their grades and achieve their personal best. What is particularly notable is the breadth of subjects where girls excel. We have always achieved strong results in STEM subjects, and these are talking points in the media at present, as the government and educators encourage greater take-up amongst girls in these subjects. But let’s equally celebrate Languages, Humanities, Arts, and creative subjects. We need all sorts of specialities to make our world tick, and there will always be a call for these talents in the jobs of the future. I am already hearing from our alumnae in business, that big-name corporate recruiters are looking for creatives: their skills are increasingly sought-after for identifying patterns and trends, and problem-solving. I’m particularly happy to see subjects on our list which are being squeezed elsewhere – subjects like Music, Product Design, Greek and Latin. We will always encourage girls to follow their hearts as well as their heads so that learning is a lifelong pleasure as well as a skill.”
