Shreya Wins Arkwright Scholarship

22 August 2019

Shreya Kamath, a Y11 pupil at Bolton School Girls’ Division, has won a prestigious Arkwright Scholarship. A delighted Head of Product Design, Miss Langley said: “Not only is this a fantastic accolade for Shreya but she will also receive £300 in her year 12 and £300 again in year 13 to spend on activities and experiences that will further inform her interest in engineering. We congratulate Shreya on her achievements and wish her luck in her future studies.

“Shreya has studied Design & Technology (D&T) at GCSE for the last 2 yrs. In her second year she chose the AQA ‘contextual challenge’ entitled ‘encouraging a healthy lifestyle’ and went on to develop a prototype for a herb growing stand. Shreya decided that encouraging users to grow herbs at home was a good way of motivating people to home cook and in turn promote a healthy way of eating and lifestyle. Following a number of design iterations, Shreya chose to make a prototype that incorporated removable and washable herb pots, LED lights that promote herb growth and a stand appearance based on the natural form of a tree. Shreya considered many factors including stability, maintenance and sustainability whilst developing her prototype and the final result was both attractive and highly usable. This coursework formed 50% of her GCSE with a written paper making up the other 50%. Shreya achieved an overall grade 9 for her D&T GCSE which she should be very proud of.

“Shreya feels Engineering is the career route she would like to pursue post A levels and so in January 2019 she chose to apply for an Arkwright Scholarship (Smallpeice Trust). Following a successful application, Shreya sat an aptitude test in February and was invited to interview in April. In July Shreya got the exciting news that she had been awarded a scholarship!”

Shreya was one of two pupils to win an Arkwright Scholarship at Bolton School Girls’ Division this year. The awards are designed to identify and nurture students with the potential to become future leaders in engineering, computing and technical design.
