Following a nerve-wracking wait, there were smiles all round at St George’s School this morning as Fifth Year (Year 11) girls opened their GCSE results. Nearly a third of the cohort at the all-girls independent school in Ascot achieved six or more GCSEs graded at 9, 8 or 7 (equivalent to A*/A in the old grading system).
St George’s top performers this year were Aimee (eight 9s, one 8, and one 7) and Ekaterina (one 9, five 8s and four 7s). Also celebrating were Olivia (nine GCSEs at 9/8/7), June (eleven GCSEs at 9/8/7), Tabitha (ten GCSEs at 9/8/7), Solana (nine GCSEs at 9/8/7) and Avah (eight GCSEs at 9/8/7). These seven girls’ talents and efforts were also rewarded back in July when they each received a number of academic prizes and cups including the Headmistress’s Awards for Outstanding Academic Achievement at Prize Giving.
Many subject areas achieved very impressive results. Of particular note was Drama achieving 56% grades 9/8, English Language 60% grade 7 and above, Spanish 55% grades 7 and above, History 55% grades 7 and above and Biology 53% grades 7 and above.
Commenting on these pleasing results, Headmistress, Liz Hewer said: “In the wake of higher levels of rigour and challenge with the newly reformed GCSEs, I am delighted by these results. We are fortunate, as a small school, that we are able to offer such an extensive range of GCSE subjects and have inspirational staff who excite intellectual curiosity and provide a stimulating and happy environment. Coupled with small class sizes, an emphasis on the individual and exceptional range of co-curricular activities, it is not surprising that pupils here are able to achieve these impressive results. Girls such as Aimee, Ekaterina, Olivia, June, Tabitha, Solana and Avah input greatly into all the activities on offer at St George’s and really deserve to have done so well. Our reputation at St George’s is built on consistency and I look forward to these capable and confident girls progressing into the Sixth Form – they have much to look forward to”
