Top English Mark for Withington Girls’ School A-Level student

15 August 2019

Withington Girls’ School A-Level student Annie Hine achieved an incredible 199 marks out of a possible 200 to earn the accolade of the top performer in OCR’s A-Level English Language examinations, taken by nearly 2000 students in the UK.

Annie, who has a place to study Psychology at Lancaster University, was not expecting to discover that she was the top OCR English Language student when she collected her results from school this morning. “I was actually a bit worried about my English mark, as I wasn’t sure about how well I’d done in my first English paper,” said Annie.

Discovering her achievement was a wonderful surprise for Annie and her parents, Sarah and Paul Hine, who are both immensely proud of Annie’s A-Level results – she achieved an A in Biology and A*s in both English Language and Psychology.

Annie joined Withington in Year 7 after attending St Catherine’s RC Primary School in Didsbury and her mother says that Annie’s language skills became apparent at a very early age. “She’s always been a great reader and couldn’t wait to start writing as a very young child.”

Mrs Hine paid tribute to the role Withington has played in Annie’s senior school education: “The staff at Withington have always been so supportive and nurturing.”

Headmistress of Withington Girls’ School, Mrs Sarah Haslam, is thrilled about Annie’s achievement: “To be recognised as the top student nationally in any A-Level subject is simply outstanding and we are delighted that Annie has received this well-deserved accolade – needless to say, our English staff are extremely pleased!”.

With her sights set on a future career as a forensic psychologist, there’s no doubt her exceptional skills will serve Annie well in her further studies and whichever career path she decides to pursue.

Annie is a member of Withington’s Class of 2019 who today celebrated the completion of their journey at Withington with a set of impressive A-Level result, recording 31% of grades at A* and 93% at A* to B.

Nine Withington students have earned their places at Oxford and Cambridge universities, joining four 2018 leavers who will also start their Oxbridge studies in September after receiving confirmed offers earlier in the year. With four girls achieving four A* grades, 13 students achieving a clean sweep of three or more A*s and nearly half of the students achieving at least three A* to A grades, the majority of girls were delighted to have secured their first choice offers to study degree courses in a wide range of subjects at the country’s top universities.
