The Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst, was the sensational venue for this year’s STEM Careers Fair – an event which seeks to show young women the opportunities available to them in STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics).
Under the imposing façade of ‘Old College’, 30 St Helen’s Year 10 students were given the chance to meet with in excess of 50 STEM employers, from engineering firms to technology developers, consultancy firms and financiers, including the likes of BAE Systems, Microsoft, Goldman Sachs, Williams F1 and PwC.
Alongside this were running a wealth of hands-on opportunities to illustrate the sort of tasks that are possible in STEM fields – students had the opportunity to try their hand at (among many others) bridge building (a great team effort!), directing bomb disposal robots, Formula 1 driving simulations and coding challenges. We were also fortunate to sit in on a panel discussion describing the variety of STEM careers available in almost any workplace and the realities of life ‘on the job’.
Given the venue, there was also a strong military representation – students were able to find out about STEM in the forces whilst trying on kit, handling equipment and trying out helicopters for size!
It was a truly inspiring day. We felt very privileged to be among the 2000 students given the opportunity to attend.
