Four pupils from St Margaret’s School for Girls in Aberdeen have successfully qualified for the semi-final of the CyberFirst Girls’ Competition which will be held on 8th February.
St Margaret’s ‘Team Minerva’ with members Emma Murray, Marcy Bryce, Shaneka Hapuarachchi and Joy Olanrewaju from II Senior will battle it out against 9 other teams in their regional semi-finals to qualify for a place in the grand final in March.
Over 520 schools nationally entered the competition and there will be 18 regional semi-finals taking place next month. This is a record number of registrations and this growing interest can only be good news for an industry which needs more female talent.
Those taking part in the qualifying round of the competition were required to complete a series of coding challenges and puzzles, based on networks and security over the course of 10 days. The highest-scoring teams from the qualifier round have been invited to the regional semi-finals.
The CyberFirst Competition provides a fun but challenging environment to inspire the next generation of young women to consider a career in cyber security. The national competition has been organised by the National Cyber Security Centre and is part of the Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ). Recently named by the Sunday Times as Scottish Independent School of the Year, St Margaret’s, as the North-East’s only girls’ school has long-championed careers in which women are under-represented and is delighted to support this initiative.
