Manor House Winners at the Rotary Young Writer Competition 2020

17 March 2020

Evie W was the Senior winner and Harriet F the Intermediate winner. The students have both received ÂŁ20 book tokens. Ms Fantham, Headteacher, said: “We are delighted with our continued success in this Young Writing Competition and my congratulations to the girls and our English Department. There was clear evidence of original and individual thinking that the Competition has tried so hard to encourage in recent years.”

Here are the comments from the Judges for Harriet’s and Evie’s pieces:

Winner: Harriet F

A beautiful story well told. You have taken huge steps in mastering one of writings great tricks, “show, don’t tell”. Casually dropping the fact that you woke up glowing immediately, tells the reader about your character’s state of mind. Well done, please keep on writing.

Winner: Evie W

Very black and moody, almost Kafkaesque in its tone. An excellent piece of writing. It is good to see a girl writing from the point of view of a male protagonist. The use of a series of short staccato sentences helps build the atmosphere, drama and urgency. I want to know more. What happened next?

The following girls received Highly Commended awards:-

Highly Commended Senior

  • Hope H
  • Sofia M-T
  • Chloe M
  • Alicia P

Highly Commended Intermediate

  • Chloe B
  • Asha M
  • Natasha W
  • Scout W

At District level, Scout W and Alicia P won Highly Commended for their stories. The judges had a difficult job as they were very impressed with the standard of entries and commented on how original they all were. Congratulations girls!
