Artwork fit for an Ambassador

Talented Year 11 artist, Bella Churchward, has her artwork on display in the residence of the UK Ambassador to the USA.

Bella, who is a boarder at Bruton at School for Girls, lives in the USA with her family. She recently entered a competition for Earth Day organised by the British Embassy in Washington and submitted a painting of Great Falls Park – a small national park near her home which has beautiful waterfalls – and won the competition in her age category (13-17 years).

The UK Ambassador to the USA, Dame Karen Pierce, saw Bella’s painting and offered to buy the work for her residence. Bella has instead made a gift of the painting to Ambassador Pierce, in return for a donation to ‘One Tree Planted’ a charity that Bella has chosen to support in honour of Earth Day.

Ambassador Pierce said: “Many congratulations to Bella for producing this very evocative artwork, which really captures the quality of the landscapes in Washington. I am sure it will attract plenty of well-deserved attention from guests and visitors to the Residence over the coming years.”

Bella said: “There were some amazing entries in my category so I was very surprised to win. I used gouache paint for the picture, which was similar in style to the painting I did for my mock GCSE Art exam. It’s an absolute honour that Ambassador Pierce wanted the painting for the residence.”

Head of Art at Bruton School for Girls, Basia Chmiel, commented: “Bella is a very talented artist. She used a photograph that she had taken of the falls as the basis of the painting and has recreated a wonderful scene. I am delighted for Bella and very proud of her achievements.”
