Headington has been awarded a Green Flag for its commitment to being more environmentally friendly.
The School was awarded a silver award two years ago and has now successfully passed its Green Flag assessment.
Members of the School’s Eco council put together an application video outlining changes made within the school community to make it more sustainable and to encourage girls and staff to be global citizens.
The key aspect of achieving the coveted award was to demonstrate how the council was continually reviewing choices within school, suggesting actions and interventions and then monitoring how effective those actions were.
Mrs Anneka Streule, who oversees the committee, said: “The assessors were really impressed with the video and that our Eco Council members were still working hard during lockdown.
“They have worked really hard over the course of the year and previous years to do this and everyone who has helped make changes in school should be really proud of themselves.”
Following this year’s annual review, the Eco Council elected to focus no Fair Trade, waste and healthy living, all three of which were tackled by the School’s Eco Lent Challenge.
Other positives include improving the recycling centre in the Sixth Form café and introducing food waste bins to the Food and Nutrition Department.
Mrs Streule added: “I feel really proud of the changes we’ve made and this makes me even more excited and determined to keep making improvements next year especially with all the challenges and opportunities that Covid-19 provides.
“I am also really proud of our environmental prefects, new and old, achieving our green flag award has been such a team effort over the past five years. Hopefully our Green Flag award will motivate every member of our community to keep making positive changes.”
