Students and staff mark International Women’s Day virtually

8 March 2021

Students and staff at Haberdashers’ Monmouth Schools marked International Women’s Day virtually on Monday 8th March.

To raise awareness of the global day – which celebrates the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women – they highlighted pledges in this year’s theme, Choose to Challenge.

Students and staff took photographs alongside challenge slides to show their support for the day.

The girls were encouraged to wear an item of purple clothing for their live lessons at home.

Teacher of English at Monmouth School for Girls, Ms Jodie Knight, said: “Monday was International Women’s Day 2021 and it was great that we were able to mark it virtually as a community.

“The coronavirus pandemic could wipe out the progress made towards gender equality over the past 25 years.

“It is estimated that gender parity will not be attained for almost a century as a result, so International Women’s Day was more important than ever.”

She added: “This year’s theme was Choose to Challenge and it was fantastic to see so many students and staff actively supporting the important campaign pledges.

“Gender equality is not a female issue, it’s a social and economic imperative. It’s vital that we include men in this equation.”
