29 April 2021

A talented 16-year-old cricketer has played her first competitive match for the Wales Senior Women’s team.

Sophia Smale, a Year 11 pupil at Monmouth School for Girls, played two Twenty20 matches for Wales against Birmingham Bears.

It has been an exciting time for Sophia, who has just become the first female cricketer in 407 years to play a competitive match for Monmouth School for Boys’ first-team.

She was immediately involved in the action, too, opening the bowling for the 1st XI against the high-powered Glamorgan Academy.

Sophia has also been selected for the Wales Under-18s girls’ squad and is part of the Western Storm Regional Academy Programme.

A left-arm spin bowling allrounder, Sophia plays her club cricket at Newport and is hoping to become a professional women’s cricketer.
