Teen spirit spurs girls to three home cricketing wins

18 June 2021

The cricket teams at Monmouth School for Girls chalked up two home wins in a double header against Newport.

Both matches were played in tremendous spirit – in a pairs’ format – and in glorious conditions at Monmouth School for Boys Sports Ground.

A lot of credit must be given to Newport Cricket Club for tailoring its teams and manoeuvring around its players during the matches to make sure that the action remained fun and enjoyable for all.

The girls’ under-12s team, captained by Sophie Williams, played against Newport Under-11s and picked up four wickets.

The under-13s, led by Grace Fernandez-Ford, bagged eight wickets against Newport Under-13s.

It was the first time that many of the Monmouth girls had played hard-ball cricket or stepped on to a grass wicket.

Nineteen girls also represented the school’s under-15s team in their first hard-ball cricket match against South Wales Falcons.

Lily Down was the school’s most successful bowler, snapping up three wickets, while Darcie Rowley also impressed, taking two as the Monmouth girls just edged their opponents in a thrilling fixture.
