Students at St Mary’s School in Cambridge have been so inspired by the amazing ‘Cows about Cambridge’ public art trail, that they have gone one step further and created a whole herd of colourful tiny cow creations to display around their school.
The ‘Mini Mâché Moo’ project saw students from years 7-13 design and decorate their very own miniature cows – extending the school’s involvement in the community arts project, which launched in the city in June. Designs were influenced by the students’ favourite artists and craftspeople, with pupils given a blank papier-mâché cow to embellish using a variety of materials. Junior School pupils also joined in the fun developing their own herd.
Head of Visual Arts at St Mary’s School, Ms Conroy, said:
“As this project clearly demonstrates, our students have truly embraced the Cows about Cambridge concept and couldn’t wait to create their own collection of cattle. Teachers also joined in with a special staff-workshop where they developed their own Mini Mâché Moos based on their favourite themes. With the cows now settled in our Senior School reception and Junior School, the herd is a reminder to students about the importance of community arts engagement and to get out and about this summer with their families to enjoy the Cows about Cambridge trail.”
St Mary’s is one of a handful of schools involved in the Mini Moo learning programme organised by Cows about Cambridge, which saw 46 Mini Moos pop-up at various locations around Cambridge during June. Students at St Mary’s School designed and created ‘Miss Mary Moo’, named after the school’s founder Mary Ward. Miss Mary Moo was unveiled at the Grand Arcade earlier in June. A further 90 large cow sculptures will be released around Cambridge from 28 June and will be on display as part of a public art trail until 7 September 2021.
