Tremendous results for A Level pupils

10 August 2021

Durham High School would like to pay tribute to its Year 13 pupils for their resolve and fortitude in achieving a tremendous set of A Level results this year.

Special congratulations go to star performers: Deputy Head Girl Ria Kejariwal who achieved 4 A* grades and an A* in the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ), Lexi Herriott, who achieved 4 A* grades, Head Girl Sunanya Aggarwal and Prefect Amy Charlesworth, who each achieved 3 A* grades and an A* in the EPQ, and Deputy Head Girl Nell Guthrie, who achieved 3 A* grades and an A in the EPQ.

Congratulations also go to the following girls who all achieved three A*/A grades or more: Emma Hall (A* A* A), Hannah Wright (A* A* A), Izzy Hardy (A* A A), Jasmine Starbuck (A* A A), Jessica Wright (A* A A) and Katie Walton (A* A A).

The School is thrilled that, overall, the vast majority of pupils were able to take up their first-choice university offers. They will now be embarking on a diverse and wide range of courses from Classics, Medicine and Law, to History and Economics, Veterinary Science and Sport and Exercise Science.

They will also be studying in all corners of the country, with pupils headed to, amongst others, Imperial College London, Durham University, University of York, Loughborough University and University of Edinburgh.

The School is also delighted that Charlotte Johnston, who was in Sixth Form last year, will take up her Cambridge Organ Scholarship at Fitzwilliam College, University of Cambridge after taking a gap year.

With examinations cancelled back in January, A Level grades have been calculated differently this year. The grades awarded to pupils were determined through a fair and rigorous process by senior staff at Durham High School. These grades reflect the results that pupils would have been expected to achieve had they been able to sit their A Level examinations last term.

Headmistress, Mrs Simone Niblock, was delighted with the results and praised all the students and staff for their hard work during this tumultuous time. She said, “We are so proud of our pupils for their success today, which highlights their forbearance and strength in character in what has been an unprecedented two years in the Sixth Form for them.”

“They have been through two extensive periods of remote learning during their A Levels and saw the cancellation of their examinations a little over four months before they were due to take them. There has been a lot of uncertainty, and intense media scrutiny, during this period, and they deserve to reap the rewards of their resilience and hard work.”

“We would also like to acknowledge the hard work of our staff, who took on a significant amount of work and were meticulous in their efforts to ensure as fair and robust grades for our pupils as possible. They have been indefatigable in their approach throughout the pandemic to ensure we continue to provide the highest quality of learning, and ensure the best possible outcomes, for our pupils.”

“We congratulate all girls on their achievements and wish them well as they embark on the next step of their educational journey.”
