St Mary’s fun run raises record amount for charities

3 February 2022

St Mary’s School in Cambridge has raised almost £15,000 from its annual fun run, which will help support vital work undertaken by local, national and international charities. The substantial amount is the most the school has raised to date through this special event, which is held in the Autumn Term.

Every year, St Mary’s students and teachers don their most extravagant fancy dress costumes and take to Lammas Land, Newnham, to run laps of the park and raise funds for charity. The 2021 fun run proved to be a real showstopper, with the school raising a total of £14,970, which will be split equally between six charities:

Cambridge Women’s Aid

EACH (East Anglia Children’s Hospices)

Alzheimer’s Research UK

Young Minds

CJ Community in Zimbabwe – for building a new Mary Ward secondary school in Mbizo

RENATE (Religious in Europe Networking Against Trafficking & Exploitation).

Students and staff created an array of imaginatively designed costumes to fit the chosen theme: ‘Fun Run – The Musical’. Headmistress, Charlotte Avery, dressed up as a Lion King character and other fantastic costumes included Mary Poppins, Aladdin, Cats, Pink Ladies and even a lobster!

Charlotte Avery, Headmistress at St Mary’s School, said:

“We are thrilled to have raised such a significant amount for our chosen charities. It was a disappointment not to go ahead with our race in 2020, so we are delighted to come back with such a bang this time around! Our fun run is steeped in St Mary’s history and is always a colourful and exuberant afternoon for all involved. We can’t wait to start planning our 2022 fun run and hope to raise further funds for equally worthy causes. As always we are extremely grateful for the support and generosity that both our students and their parents give this event.”
