Cheltenham Ladies’ College celebrates International Women’s Day

14 March 2022

Tuesday 8th March marked International Women’s Day (IWD), with the theme #BreakTheBias. The campaign challenges us to call out gender bias, discrimination and stereotyping, in support of a gender equal world which is diverse, equitable and inclusive.

Across College, students and staff struck the #BreakTheBias pose – crossing their arms to show solidarity for this year’s campaign.

Marked annually on 8th March, International Women’s Day is one of the most important days of the year to celebrate women’s achievements, raise awareness about women’s equality, lobby for accelerated gender parity and fundraise for female-focused charities.

This year’s International Women’s Day coincided with National Careers Week, from 7th to 11th March, and many of the events organised by College’s Professional Guidance Centre (PGC) featured inspiring women in a wide variety of fields, including the creative industries, business, STEM, the emergency services and recruitment.

A key theme of the week was the importance of a broad and forward-thinking view of success, and the events gave students the opportunity to learn about a wide range of exciting careers and vocations.

The week was kick-started with a whole-school PGC assembly based around the Disney film Encanto with its important messages about being yourself and the dangers of trying to be perfect.

On Tuesday, to mark IWD, a ‘Females of the Future STEM & Business Multi-Employer’ online event brought together speakers from PwC, Capgemini, Virgin Media, Spectris, World Wide Technology and Marsh McLennan to talk to students about possible career paths.

Additional events included a brand development workshop where students had the opportunity to learn about the importance of creating a digital brand and keeping safe online, a digital networking event bringing together women in creative industries where they are under-represented such as video game animation, and a ‘Meet the Employers and Employees’ event, which gave students the opportunity to meet female employers and employees in the emergency services and recruitment sector.
