A Sixth Form athlete at Monmouth School for Girls has stormed to a national 400m title.

Olivia Harwood achieved a personal-best of 59.43 to be crowned the new Welsh National Schools Under-20s 400m champion.

Representing South East Wales, Oliva was the first pupil at the school to win the title since Mrs Sarah Rossiter, who now teaches PE at Monmouth, in 1996.

Victoria Rossiter, who has just finished Year 8, represented South East Wales in the Under-15 high jump, finishing in eighth place.

Year 8 pupils Romy Farquhar, Victoria Rossiter, Sienna McKenna, Jess Stentiford, Lauren Woodhouse, Izzy Taylor, Alice Meredith, Sophie Bailey and Verity Ainsworth are celebrating after winning a bronze medal at the Welsh Schools Team Athletics Championships.

There were wins for Sophie Bailey (long jump), Alice Meredith (1500m) and Verity Ainsworth (shot).

It was the first time in more than 10 years that a team from the school had qualified for this competition and they performed superbly to win a bronze medal.
