Students at King Edward VI High School for Girls (KEHS) are looking forward to the future after receiving the school’s best ever set of A Level results.
An outstanding 66% of grades were A*, and 91% were A*/A – the highest percentages ever recorded by the Birmingham-based independent school – and 96% were A* – B. Of the Upper Sixth cohort of 92 students, 37 (40%) achieved straight A*s.
KEHS is renowned for the rounded education it offers to the brightest girls from in and around Birmingham, irrespective of their social or economic background, and it is particularly celebrating the achievements of students who demonstrated that academic study is only one tenet of school life.
Samantha, a violinist who previously led the National Children’s Orchestra of Great Britain and who was the first girl from the UK to win the global Molecular Frontiers Inquiry Prize, achieved six A*s – in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Further Mathematics and the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) – and is now bound for Cambridge to read Medicine.
Lauren, who ran the Creative Writing Club, achieved six A*s – in Art, Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics and the EPQ – plus an A in Further Mathematics, and will read Medicine at Imperial College London.
Emily, who has represented Great Britain in Ultimate Frisbee, will soon be beginning her Geography studies at Nottingham.
Sixth Form Sports Scholars and twins Amelia and Harriet will be heading to Queen’s University Belfast to study Dentistry and Edinburgh to study Economics, respectively.
Meanwhile, Erin, who organised well-subscribed online Drama Clubs during the pandemic, is heading to Central Saint Martins to study Fashion Communication: Fashion Journalism.
Danielle, who ran the KEHS Cinema Club and frequently made short films for the school, including our inaugural TuneUp trailer, is heading to Warwick to study Film and Literature.
Continuing the creative theme, Iman, who was a member of the team that worked with a Graphic Designer to produce the school magazine ‘Phoenix’, will study Graphic Design at Loughborough.
Russell Group universities again dominate the destinations that KEHS students have won coveted places at, and of particular note this year are:
- 22 Medicine places
- 4 Dentistry places
- 1 Veterinary Medicine place
- 7 reading Economics and 2 reading Finance
- 1 reading PPE (Politics, Philosophy and Economics)
- 3 reading Politics, International Relations or Politics and International Relations
- 3 heading to LSE (London School of Economics and Political Science) to read: Philosophy, Logic and Scientific Method; History; and, Economics.
Also significant is the success of students who chose A Level subject combinations that may not be considered a ‘stereotypical route’ onto a certain university course, but which played to their individual strengths and interests – including among students who will now be embarking on Medicine or Veterinary Medicine and who chose to complement their Sciences/Maths studies with Arts subjects at A Level.
Kirsty von Malaisé, KEHS Principal, said: “We are thrilled to congratulate our Upper Sixth on their outstanding A Level results, the result of expert teaching and pastoral support, and also the impressive focus, resilience and ambition the students demonstrated during the last few Covid-impacted years. These were the first public exams sat by this cohort.
“Life at KEHS is about far more than academic achievement: a well-rounded education with a breadth of co-curricular activity encompassing clubs, sport, music and service inspires confidence and purpose in our students, which prepares them for life beyond school. This is why the individual stories behind a stellar set of results – of overcoming challenges, of balancing study with sport or musical pursuits, of pursuing individual strengths and interests – are so meaningful.
“Within the set of whole school results, individual subjects have performed exceptionally well across the board. Subjects which were hit hard by pandemic constraints such as Art and Theatre Studies both recorded 80% of their grades at A*, with English attaining 75% and Geography a phenomenal 82% A*. Mathematics and Economics both attained an outstanding 74% A* grades.
“Our Upper Sixth will now be going on to the very best universities to study a diverse range of subjects, and I wish the very best to this outstanding Class of 2022 as they embark on this new chapter in their lives. We look forward to hearing from them in the months and years ahead.”
