A Level Art and Photography students enjoy workshop with prominent artists

2 February 2023

St Mary’s Art and Photography Department recently offered A Level Art and Photography students a packed day’s creative media workshop, designed to support their coursework portfolios. Students met practicing professionals who are working within the creative industry and benefitted from hands-on experience.

The students worked with C.Wilkinson, a Ph.D. fine artist from De Montfort University, she is a holographic glass expert who worked with our students to develop exciting and innovative holographic photographic outcomes. They also work with qualified glasswork artist C.Vinten who has exhibited across the country and creates aesthetics and imaginative hand-crafted pieces.

Ms Conroy, Head of Visual Arts said

“Opportunities like this to work with a creative professional on less accessible formats of art practice are vital in allowing our students to see beyond their current studies and what a future might hold for them in a creative degree or creative employment.”

Lola H.L., current Sixth Form student, reflected on the workshops saying:

“These workshops really broadened my knowledge of how many ways you can create art, I love how many new skills I was able to pick up.”

Grace M., a fellow student, commented:

“I thought the balance of the workshops between creative practice and the science of the media we were using was great. It allowed me to understand the mechanics behind these materials.”

Sara U., another student, also shared her thoughts:

“The holographic workshop gave us a very controlled environment in which to address science and accuracy in photography, and the glass workshop gave us creative freedom to develop abstract playful work.”
