A team of netballers from Durham High School will be representing the North East at the England Netball National Schools Finals in March.
The U19 team from the all-girls school will compete as one of the top 18 schools across the country, in the final of the prestigious competition on Saturday 11 March 2023 at Oundle School.
The girls made it to the National Finals having topped both the County and Regional competitions, without losing a single match. They were crowned County Champions after wins against their closest rivals Durham School (17-1) and Durham Johnston (17-9), as well as Harton College (14-4), Whitburn Academy (15-6) and St Robert’s (30-2).
The regional round saw victories against Yarm (15-6), Prudhoe (29-4), Barnard Castle (14-1), Durham Johnston (13-12), Royal Grammar School Newcastle (7-6), Newcastle High School for Girls (17-10) and Ponteland (14-4).
Jo Slane, Director of Sport at Durham High School, said: “The team played superbly and we are immensely proud of their achievements this season. To reach the National Schools’ Finals is outstanding, it will be fantastic to see Durham High School representing the North East, playing against the top school teams in England.”
“The girls are wonderful role models for our younger players and are the perfect example of what can be achieved when you are dedicated, determined and collaborative as a team.”
Simone Niblock, Principal at Durham High School, added: “We are absolutely thrilled that our girls have succeeded in gaining a place in netball’s National Schools’ Finals.”
“They are all fantastic professionals and deserve the opportunity to compete at the highest level, against some of the other best schools in the country. We wish them the best of luck in the finals in March.”
Durham High School’s commitment to sport and extra-curricular activities was recognised in a recent report by the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI), which found it to be ‘excellent’ across all aspects of school life, from the rounded education it provides to the social and moral development of its pupils.
The ISI report praised DHS on the excellent skills that pupils demonstrate ‘beyond the classroom in response to their teachers’ encouragement and challenging enrichment activities’. It also highlighted the school’s success at local, regional and national level of sport.
