Girls’ poems have swept the board at this year’s GSA’s annual Creating Writing Competition winning in every category with three immensely moving and beautifully written pieces.
Unveiled this week at GSA’s perennially popular Summer Briefing, Saffron from Palmers Green High School won the KS4 and 5 category with her hypnotic piece ‘I am Earth’, Olivia from Manor House School won the KS3 category with her moving poem ‘The Environment is Dying’, and Jemima at Bedford Girls’ School lyrical letter poem ‘Dear Earth’ took the top spot in the KS2 category.

As the winner of the eldest category, Saffron has won an eco-poetry workshop with award-winning writer and editor Karen McCarthy Woolf (link), so watch this space to see more on that later in the year.
We’re thrilled to share more writing with you which allow for more girls’ voices to be heard.
This year girls were invited to submit pieces to share their imaginations on the eco-theme of ‘Dear Earth…’. With the earth and planet uppermost in many minds the competition was designed to give expression to girls’ thoughts on the earth’s future, highlight how precious our natural world is, and show the world girls’ experiences of the earth and planet now.
Thanks to all the girls and schools who made time to write and submit to the Creative Writing Competition, and to our Heads and busy teachers for supporting it. We received hundreds of entries and so enjoyed reading all the inspiring writing about our environment and sustainability themes, and we couldn’t be prouder of our GSA students.
We can’t wait to do it all again next year!
