GSA Netball Tournament 2019 – Event report

This year, 465 girls and 59 members of staff descended upon Condover Hall in Shrewsbury for the Year 8 and 9 GSA Netball tournament organised by Masterclass Sports Tours. There were 23 schools in attendance with five making their first appearance at the tournament (Benenden School, Malvern St James, Streatham and Clapham High, St Helen and St Katharine and Wimbledon High School). Following very wet weather last year, we were extremely lucky to have a cloudless Saturday and only the occasional shower on Sunday, meaning all scheduled matches were completed. Congratulations to Withington Girls’ School and Godolphin & Latymer for winning the Year 8 and 9 tournaments respectively.

We were extremely fortunate to have Commonwealth Gold Medal Winner Eboni Usoro-Brown in attendance for the second consecutive year. She led an engaging Q&A session for all of the schools on Friday evening on the lawn outside the house with the setting sun in the background. Eboni was generous enough to bring her Commonwealth Gold Medal, World Cup Bronze Medal and 100th Cap with her and passed these round so that each of the students could see all three. On Saturday afternoon, after the first day’s play had concluded, Eboni led a ‘Coach the Coach’ session, where teachers were able to ask questions on training routines, match play and tactics. Eboni attended both tournaments on both days and was on hand to present the trophies at the Year 9 awards presentation.

As well as netball, the girls took part in many other activities throughout the action-packed weekend. These activities included abseiling, trapeze, laser maze and tunnelling. These activities were offered in school groups on Friday afternoon and also as drop-in sessions on Saturday afternoon and evening, so that the girls got the opportunity to work on and improve their teamwork skills. Following an extremely successful event, we are looking forward to welcoming both existing and new schools back next year. The event will take place over the weekend of the 18-20th September 2020.
