- Head Mrs Jane Evans
Established in 1900 and set in 40 acres of beautiful Somerset countryside, just two hours south west of London, Bruton School for Girls is a day school for girls and boys aged 2–7 and a day and boarding school for girls aged 7–18.
We believe in providing an education that will equip our students to grow intellectually, think independently and become confident and responsible young women. What really sets us apart is our focus on each girl as an individual.
We are proud that our size means we get to know each and every girl personally. It is this academic and pastoral support that means we help each girl to reach her full potential and become the most amazing person she can be.
Creativity is central to our ethos, and girls are encouraged to develop creative and critical thinking in their academic subjects, as well as in the traditional creative subjects of art, drama and music.
Girls can take advantage of the many opportunities on offer including competitive sport, the popular Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme and a wide range of extra-curricular clubs and activities.
We enjoy an excellent academic reputation, which is especially notable as we are a non-academically selective school. We are consistently one of the highest achieving schools in the county at GCSE and A level, and score particularly highly on ‘value added’ measures which show that each girl significantly exceeds her expected grades.
Our school motto is ‘Follow The Gleam’ which originates from a poem by Alfred, Lord Tennyson. The Gleam can be best described as our light of inner inspiration, or the individual light that guides each of our girls throughout her time at this school. We are proud to have been helping girls ignite their passions and follow their dreams for 120 years.

Bursaries & Scholarships
We are keen to recognise and reward talented students. There is a range of scholarships available at the discretion of the Headmistress and the Governors’ Awards Committee, for girls entering Senior 1 (11+), Senior 3 (13+) and the Sixth Form who demonstrate outstanding talent or achievement in Music, Drama, Art, Sport or Academic Studies. All Round scholarships are available at 11+ and 13+ and scholarships are also available to Sunny Hill Prep.
Scholars may receive between 5% and 10% tuition fee remission for the duration of their attendance at Bruton School for Girls. The allocation of a scholarship is affected not only by the standard of the candidate’s application, but also the number and quality of other successful applicants.
Help with fees is available in the form of Governors’ Exhibitions and Head of Prep Awards. Both are means-tested financial awards for pupils who would benefit from an education at Bruton School for Girls or Sunny Hill Preparatory School, but whose family may need additional financial support.
They may be in place of, or in addition to, a Scholarship. To apply, parents are asked to complete a confidential financial questionnaire and each application is considered on an individual basis. Consideration is given to the number of applicants and the individual needs of each applicant in determining the value of financial support. Awards are usually in the region of 10-20% remission of fees, but may rise to a maximum of 40% remission in exceptional circumstances.Find out more >
