Bruton School for Girlsupcoming open day (click for details)
Established in 1900 and set in 40 acres of beautiful Somerset countryside just under two hours south west of London, Bruton School for Girls is a day school for girls and boys aged 3 – 7 and a day and boarding school for girls aged 7 – 18.
We provide full, weekly and flexi boarding in a safe environment which reflects the qualities of good home life, nurturing children and guiding them through adolescence towards maturity.
We are passionate about, and experts in, girls’ education. Our small size means we can focus on your daughter as a unique individual and concentrate on what she wants to achieve – her dreams and aspirations for the future – our focus is on individuality! We believe in offering every child a well-rounded education in an environment with the space to inspire, challenge, encourage and support them.
We enjoy an excellent academic reputation and are frequently the top school in Somerset at GCSE (DfE Attainment 8 measure). This is particularly impressive as we are an academically non-selective school. We are one of the top schools in the UK for added value which means that we add on average over one whole grade to a girls’ predicted attainment.
At A level 33% of students in 2017/18 gained AAB or higher, where two of those grades were the harder ‘facilitating’ subjects, and 15% of all grades were A*. Almost all girls go to their first choice university.
Our pastoral care is ‘highly, highly, highly rated’ and students are well supported through a Tutor and Hall system overseen by Heads of Year. Our girls develop their talents and skills so that they leave as confident, well-rounded individuals.
Nicky Botterill has been Headmistress since September 2012, having previously been Deputy Head of St Mary’s, Calne and Putney High School. Changes have included the restructuring and refurbishment of the boarding houses and Sixth Form Centre. We continue to focus upon further developing the student experience we provide, including preparation for higher education, careers, the world of work and life generally.
From Nursery to Sixth Form we offer extensive enrichment opportunities throughout the school. We have a strong creative theme encouraging girls to think critically and creatively. In a school that is an academic greenhouse rather than hothouse, the art, music, drama and science departments are outstanding. An enriching lecture programme, annual Arts and Science Weeks, author visits and local business links complement the academic offering.
Our boarding houses are situated on the school campus and provide a ‘home from home’ atmosphere of warmth and security adapted to the age of the girls. Weekends are busy with a range of activities, from local wildlife walks, trips out to places of interest and quizzes, crafts and cooking.
Specialist school facilities include the music school, art studios and professionally equipped theatre. An Astroturf pitch, dance studio, gymnasium and fitness suite, tennis courts and a solar-panel-heated outdoor swimming pool are just a few of the facilities available to the girls. Many clubs and activities include the prestigious Leiths cookery course, horse riding, ballet and gymnastics etc. Music lovers can try jazz, choir, orchestra and ensemble groups and sporting activities include netball, athletics, tennis and hockey.
Railway stations in Bruton and in nearby Castle Cary and Gillingham give excellent direct links to London, Bath, Bristol, Exeter and Salisbury. Bristol Airport is only 30 miles away. Transport can be arranged for boarders travelling from Heathrow or Gatwick.
Gifted & Talented
Academically we have high expectations of our students and aim to develop their confidence and self-belief. Our philosophy is that the top grades should be seen as realistic targets within their reach.
Able, gifted and talented students are stretched in the classroom with extension work. We have a scholars club with termly lectures and meetings. For Sixth Form students there is an Oxbridge preparation group.
The school has an excellent Skills Development Unit to support pupils throughout the school who have additional learning needs. Close monitoring of girls by academic and pastoral staff help identify any learning difficulties that may require additional support.
Bursaries & Scholarships
Means-tested financial assistance is available.
Sibling and Armed Forces discounts of up to 10% off termly fees.
Scholarships are offered at 11+, 13+ and Sixth Form.
